Why Water Works Better

Sometimes we do things simply because that's what our parents did and what everyone else does. When it comes to cleaning a child's bottom after the washroom, we use water. Not wipes, not toilet paper, not anything else. Water is in fact the most effective cleanser available for this purpose — and the gentlest. Feces and urine are never fully removed by wiping alone. The residue that remains, combined with the chemicals in commercial wipes, is the primary cause of diaper rash and skin irritation in most children.

The Problem with Wipes

We have seen many bottoms come to our childcare over the years — and they frequently arrive with diaper rash, irritations, and redness. Within a short time of using our care routine, these clear up. Not because we apply cream or medication, but because we use water. Wipes and toilet paper leave residue. That residue, in combination with moisture, creates the conditions for chronic skin irritation.

Water cleans the skin completely. It leaves no chemical residue. It removes fecal matter and urine thoroughly. And it is free. If your child has persistent diaper rash or skin irritation despite good hygiene practices, switching to water is very often the complete solution.

How We Do It

We have a handheld toilet sprayer attachment on our washroom toilet — a simple bidet-style sprayer available from hardware and home stores. Warm water, a clean dry cloth, and done. The children quickly get used to it and often ask for it at home. If you'd like to try the same setup, we're happy to share the product link — it's a small investment that makes an immediate difference to your child's comfort and skin health.
